My First Taxi Ride in the USA
Posted By USAPinoy on April 19, 2010
This happened months ago when I had my check-up at Kaiser Permanente, Martinez. My husband dropped me off early at Kaiser but couldn’t pick me up since he’s still at work. The time I had to wait for husband to pick me up was a bit long and I was deliberating whether I should call a taxi or just wait for six hours more for my husband to pick me up.
I have never called a taxi yet and never has rode in one, especially not when I’m by myself. And to be honest I am scared to call a taxi, I have these thoughts that the taxi driver might turn out to be a serial killer, kill me and drop me off somewhere that nobody will know. But since I didn’t have any choice I decided to call one whose number I have been hiding in my wallet. This was the number of the green taxi that I always see across my son’s daycare, he probably lives there in that neighboring house so I thought that if something happens to me, then my husband can call this number and raid that house.
Anyway so I called the taxi and he agreed to pick me up and take me to the mall. I waited and waited then I saw a cab inching his way to where I was. It was a yellow cab! This isn’t the green taxi that I saw and told my husband about!! Is this the one to pick me up?! Inside me I was a bit panicking. Who is this impostor??? My heart was racing a bit. Should I go and trust him? I decided to get in the taxi but I was really nervous.
And this was the conversation that ensued..
Driver: So where are you going?
Me ( trying to test him) : Did he not say where I was going? (”He” meaning the other driver that referred me to him)
Driver: He said … (city where the mall was )
Me: What’s the number of the guy who transferred me to you?
( He called somebody, they talked a bit, and he said the city where I wanted to be dropped off but not the name of the mall that I’ve mentioned to the other guy so I was still very suspicious)
Me: Okay let me get off first and call him because I don’t know you, he’s the one I called. I just don’t want to get in and…
I got off the taxi and I called the taxi driver that I called first..
Me: Did you send another taxi to pick me up?
Him: Yes
Me: What color, what company?
HIm: Yellow taxi, Yellow Cab.
Me: Why did you transfer me to him when it was you I called?
Him: Because he is closer to Kaiser. Why is there any problem?
Me: No, it’s okay. It’s just that you are the one I called and you gave me to him. Is that guy okay?
Him: Yeah he’s okay.
And so I decided to get in the cab. The driver seemed sulking all through out the way, I felt embarrassed but heck, that’s my first taxi ride here in America and I didn’t want to tell him that I am paranoid. I told the driver my thank you and said, “Don’t be mad now, okay ? Smile” and got off … =))
